The WiMAX
Technology
What is WiMAX?
WiMAX is a forum of
companies having different types of interest in
broad band wireless access technology in
metropolitan area networks. It consists of major
equipment manufacturers, operators, chip
developers and component manufacturers.
In short WiMAX
introduces a new standard for broadband wireless
access in an area with the size of a big city.
It can be considered as the equivalent of WiFi
but in a larger area and an extremely higher
technology and capacity.
The equipment based
on WiMAX technology can cover a city with few
base stations and thousands of users.
The Key advantage
of WiMAX compared to other solutions for
covering a city with wireless access, is that it
is a standard and this means you can have base
station form one vendor working with CPE
(Customer premises equipment) from another
vendor. As the number of CPEs needed worldwide
is in the range of millions, the chipset for
WiMAX CPE is affordable to manufacture by giant
component manufacturers like Intel ®.
This means you can
have a city covered by WiMAX base stations and
thousands of users can have devices no more
expensive than $300 and each user can have a
throughput of nearly 20 Mbps !!
